Q: Why is Laura Ingraham bashing Rudy Giulianai on a daily basis?
A: Because he's not going away like he was supposed to.
It's a scary time for the far-right kingmakers. Their efforts to make Rudy Giuliani and annoint one of their own are being thwarted at every turn.
Pat Robertson endorsed Giulianai, and Hugh Hewitt has
called it a two-man race between Rudy and Romney. Larry Kudlow is saying Rudy is
at the top of his game going into the point of the campaign where it starts to matter. Meanwhile, RCP polling average shows Rudy
holding a commanding lead, and his support growing, Thompson's falling steeply, McCain and Huckabee rising sharply and Romney remaining basically flat.
Meanwhile, the efforts to rally around a conservative alternative are falling flat, as the conservative kingmakers do what they do best - shoot themselves in the foot. Some endorsed Romney. One prominent evangelical endorsed Giuliani, much to the chagrin of the "anti-Rudy" crowd, and
Dobson is ready to endorse Huckabee, who appears to be making a game of it in Iowa.
It wasn't supposed to be like this. Rudy Giuliani wasn't supposed to be a serious candidate. This was McCain's race, at least until the conservative pooh-bahs could convince Thompson to run. Then it was Thompson's to lose. It was widely understood that Rudy was only popular because people didn't know anything about him. Once they got to know him, he'd falter.
But a funny thing has happened - Rudy has turned out to be a great campaigner, while Thompson has turned out to be a lousy one, to the point where wild-eyed "Fred-Heads" have been switching to Team Mitt in droves. Menwhile, Rudy keeps playng his own game, and playing it well. He attacks Hillary while his rivals attack him; he's gained knowledge on the big issues of the campaign; and he's been consistently strong in every debate. Suddenly, people are starting to realize, hey, this guy's been at the top of the heap for months now, and his support is slowly growing.
So now it's come to this: conservative kingmakers are in full panic mode over Rudy. Ingraham is trashing him regularly on her show; now the bandwagon clown McCullough, who switched from Fred to Mitt after he realized Fred is a lazy campaigner, is trying to start an
"Anyone But Rudy" effort. Why? Because Giuliani is on ther verge of soldifying his status as front-runner, which means the usual kingmakers are being stripped of their power.
Aaaahhhhh! A good week!
